Job Training
Job Training

Learning on the job developed out of the apprenticeship system imported from Europe where the apprentice or student was hired by a master and was taught the master's craft or profession. For some industries like construction and especially shipbuilding, this tradition remained strong; in others things began to change quickly after 1850 as small woodworking and machine shops grew into factories and apprentices became more of a source of cheap labour than students of a craft. As trade unions developed, they formed their own apprenticeship system and discouraged entry to jobsites by nonunion members. By the twentieth century, technical schools had taken over this kind of training.
