Children
Children at Work

At some periods in New Brunswick's past, children were required to work. Sometimes the work was considered training for a future job. Any wages they received would be added to the family income, or more often than not, these children worked only for food and a place to sleep. Because mandatory attendance at schools in New Brunswick was not widely enforced until the twentieth century, many children were put to work in factories, mills or farms. It was not until the late nineteenth century that laws were put in place to prevent the exploitation of children.
