The independent business owner performed a dual role in the community both as service provider and gathering place. Long hours were often part of the job since owners usually determined their own opening and closing times. Rewards came in closer neighbourhood contacts, personalized service and a greater sense of belonging. Barbershop customers had their own monogrammed shaving mugs and one could get credit at the grocer's without a credit card.
