The Honourable William Wedderburn (Saint John 1834-1918) had a successful career in New Brunswick as a lawyer, journalist, judge and politician. From 1870 to 1882, he served in the New Brunswick Legislative Assembly as MLA for Saint John. He was a member of many local organizations including the Mechanics’ Institute. In that organization he held several offices including that of president, from 1869-1872. His donation of American Colonial Currency serves as further evidence of his close relationship with the Institute. There is no known record of how he acquired the notes. They may have been brought to New Brunswick by Loyalist, but Wedderburn’s own parents were from Great Britain.
