Lactarius thyinos
Lactarius thyinos A.H. Smith
Scattered in soil under Picea rubens, Caledonia Gorge Protected Natural Area, New Brunswick (13-08-12/08a).
Scattered among mosses in wet seepage area in the forest, associated with Abies balsamea, Picea rubens, Alnus incana and Thuja occidentalis, Goodfellow Brook Protected Natural Area, New Brunswick (16-09-19/09).
Basidiospores 8.5-10.8 X 6.6-7.6 μm – D/d = 1.23-1.43 (13-08-12/07); 8.7-9.9 X 6.6-7.5 μm, D/d = 1.23-1.37 (16-09-19/09). Stipitipellis an ixocutis. Cheilocystidia not seen. Pleurocystidia similar to narrow lactiferous hyphae, tortuous.
Lactarius thyinos is similar to Lactarius deterrimus but differs in not developing green colours in cap and stipe, in having an outer gelatinous layer on the stipe (an ixocutis) and in its longer, narrower basidiospores.
