Crepidotus applanatus var. applanatus
Crepidotus applanatus var. applanatus (Pers.) P. Kumm.
Gregarious (3) among mosses on rotting log of Acer sp.? (wood sample included with specimen), Spednic Lake Protected Natural Area, 600 m NW of Bolton Lake, York Co., New Brunswick (17-08-17/02).
Basidiospores brown in spore print, spherical or nearly so, finely verruculose, 3.8-4.9 X 3.6-4.7 μm, D/d = 1.00-1.08 (average[31]: 4.4 X 4.3 μm, D/d = 1.02). Cheilocystidia somewhat irregular in shape, clavate to ventricose-capitate, not branched, about 27-40 X 7-11 μm.
A nearly pure white species, including the lamellae, which may mislead a collector to believe it belongs to one of the Pleurotus look-alikes. The strong brown spore print will confirm its identity. The arguably distinct variety C. applanatus var. diversus differs in having the cheilocystidia branched or lobed at the apex.
