DISCUSSION OF FUNGUS-LIKE ORGANISMS THAT ARE NOT TRUE FUNGI

Some organisms may look like fungi yet are not really members of the Kingdom Fungi. These organisms were considered by earlier mycologists to be fungi and were always studied by mycologists. Because of these traditions members of this assemblage are still included in most mycology textbooks and are still mainly studied by mycologists.

Several groups of non-fungi fall into this catagory and are still discussed at mycological meetings. Here we will focus on only two, the slime moulds and the Oomycota. Both are common in typical fungal habitats and both can be studied using traditional mycological methods.
