Russula densifolia Gillet

Picture of Russula densifolia

Gregarious to clustered in litter in mature forest under Abies balsamea, Little Lepreau, New Brunswick (21-09-16/01).

Russula densifolia ranges in colour from dark gray to nearly white like the ones in the photo. The flesh is white at first but turns red soon after being exposed to air. Unlike many species of Russula, R. densifolia has lamellulae, the short gills that do not extend from the pileus margin to the stipe.

Basidiopores 6.8-8.9 X 6.0-7.3 μm, D/d = 1.10-1.22
