Entoloma majaloides P.D. Orton

Picture of Entoloma_majaloides

Solitary at the side of an old woods road, associated with Picea rubens, Populus tremuloides, Acer rubrum, Betula papyrifera and Larix laricina, Kouchibouguac National Park, New Brunswick. (13-09-19/02)

Basidiospores pink in spore print, broadly heterodiametrical, usually with 5 sides in profile, 8.5-10.5 X 6.7-8.6 μm, Q = 1.14-1.38 (average[22]: 9.2 X 7.5 &mu:m, Q = 1.23). Basidia 4-spored, clamped at the base. Hymenial cystidia lacking. Pileipellis a thin cutis of clamped and encrusted hyphae above a subcutis of short broad hyphae.

Entoloma majaloides is a rather fragile mushroom having a light yellow brown umbonate pileus, white stipe and lamellae and lacking a farinaceous odour. Microscopically it is characterized by the encrusted hyphae of the pileipellis and presence of clamp connections on the basidia. It is similar to E. sericatum, described as having greyer colours in the pileus and in having a farinaceous odour.
