Fleshy Fungi of New Brunswick >> Cortinarius acutus

Cortinarius acutus (Pers.) Fr.

Picture of Cortinarius acutus

Gregarius (12) among dicrana, coastal bluff forest dominated by Abies balsamea and Betula cordifolia, Campobello Island, New Brunswick (24-09-16/02).

Basidiospores ellipsoidal to subamygdaloid, 7.6-8.2 X 4.6-5.4 μm, 1.48-1.70. Cheilocystidia cylindrical to slightly clavate, 22-30 X 4.5-6.8 μm.

The cheilocystidia differ from those described for C. acutus in much of the European literature (eg. Funga Nordica), where they are described as balloon-shaped. Collection 24-09-16/02 has cheilocystidia that are not at all balloon-like, being nearly cylindrical and not dissimilar to immature basidia. However, as seen above, the immature basidia are shorter and more broadly rounded at the apex.
