Fleshy Fungi of New Brunswick >> Cantharellula umbonata

Cantharellula umbonata (Gmelin:Fr.) Singer

Picture of Cantharellula_umbonata

Gregarious amongst gametophytes of Pleurozium sp. and Polytrichum sp. along path, associated with Picea rubens and Abies balsamea, Nepisiguit Protected Natural Area, New Brunswick (19-08-16/04).

Although C. umbonata is generally said to lack hymenial cystidia, there are scattered filamentous cells among the basidia that could be considered to be such. One of these is figured at the end of the row of basidia in the above illustration.

Basidiospores narrowly ellipsoidal to sub-boletoid, smooth, amyloid, 6.3-8.6 X 3.0-3.7 μm, D/d = 1.93-2.73 (average = 7.3 X 3.2 μm, D/d = 2.29)
