SOURCES OF CHECKLIST RECORDS

No checklist is entirely credible if the names it contains cannot be confirmed by reexamination of identified specimens. Every record on our checklist is backed by an actual specimen in an institutional herbarium, documented here by reference to the code of the herbarium where one or more of the specimens are located. Herbarium codes, acronyms composed of one or more letters, have been assigned to each of the world's larger herbaria. These are listed in a publication called Index herbariorum. Part I: The Herbaria of the world (Holmgren et al., 1990). For example, the herbarium of the New Brunswick Museum bears the code NBM.
