Yvon Durell, was born on 19 October 1929 in Baie-Ste-Anne, New Brunswick. Yvon spent his early years working in the fishing industry, and began prize fighting on weekends. He entered the professional boxing ring in 1947. Before long, Yvon had become one of Canada’s prize middleweight fighters. He won the Canadian middleweight championship in May of 1953, and in 1954, he won the Canadian light-heavyweight championships. He broke into the world ring in the late 1950’s and by 1957, was in the top ten rankings for his weight class. He retired from boxing in 1963. Yvon Durell was inducted into the NB Sports Hall of Fame in 1971, the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame in 1975, and the Canadian Boxing Hall of Fame in 1989.
