B all gowns, riding habits, wedding dresses – women’s fashion often provides one of the most fascinating insights into the past. The New Brunswick Museum presents this exhibition of heritage clothing selected from its own collection, one of the finest and most extensive in the Atlantic region.

Often lovingly preserved by successive generations of descendents, many of these costumes have not been seen for decades, indeed, some have not been seen for almost two centuries. Like most costume, they provide intimate and personal access into the life experiences of innumerable women, urban and rural, within the province. Serviceable or stylish, these garments demonstrate their owners' status and fashion sensibilities just as they also reveal something of society's attitudes towards the role of their wearers.
