RIGHT WHALE

Right Whale (Eubalaena glacialis) cervical vertebrae: All mammals have seven cervical, or neck vertebrae, whether a giraffe, a whale, or a mouse. However, whales and dolphins lack a joint between the first (the atlas) and second (the axis) vertebrae of the neck, hence they cannot shake their heads. Furthermore, Right Whales, dolphins, and porpoises, have all seven neck vertebrae fused into one unit. This rigid neck helps to streamline the animal and aid propulsion.

The New Brunswick Museum mammal collection houses Canada's largest collection of whale skeletons and tissues, an important and frequently consulted scientific resource. But the large bones of whales also have an inherent sculpture-like beauty and the current marine mammal gallery has been designed to try and emphasize this feature.
