| LUNA MOTH |

Luna Moth (Actias luna): The Luna moth, a wild silk moth (Saturnidae), is one of the largest
and most beautiful of North American moths. Night-flying habits and a 7 day adult life span lead to infrequent
observation. Luna moth caterpillars feed on white or paper birch leaves, with most adults in New Brunswick
flying from late June to August. Although still common throughout the hardwood forests of eastern North
America, this beautiful moth has declined in numbers due to habitat destruction and widespread use of vapor lights,
which disrupt mating. Assembled over the past century, the New Brunswick Museum insect collection includes specimens
of moths and butterflies that help to document the distribution and relative abundance of the many species
native to the province. |
